Hand Held Livestock Brand Database Application - Production Release

Background:

One of the local economies in Western Canada is livestock. Many thousands of cattle spend their summers in the mountain ranges preparing for their "big day" at the livestock auction. So ensure that the payment from the bidder to the seller is done accurately, every animal has been "branded" to identify its owner.

This application was designed for a company that had previously used a heavy catalog containing images of all the brands and descriptions of who owns them. The goal of the project was to replace the cumbersome book with a hand held computer. This application was a joint-effort between myself and another student and was the primary focus COMP491 - Computing Science Project.

This version was implemented on an HP iPaq using Microsoft Visual Studio.NET 2003. This was the second version of the application and is mated to a desktop application that was developed by another team.

Due to confidentiality agreements with the client, source code cannot be provided.

Entering a Brand

Once the brand has been entered into the system, the owner's data is displayed. Previously, the brand inspector had to flip through hundres of pages to find the brand, taking a lot of time.

The "Microsoft SQL Server: SQL Server 2005 Mobile Edition" searched the 14,000 records in under 4 seconds average during testing.

Documentation

"Power Tips" in the documentation helped users master the system after one or two search attempts. Since the application is intended to be used on a hand held device in every type of extreme weather that Western Canada can offer, both ease of use as well as simple transition from the paper-based system was crucial.
